Prehistory

Most of the numerous unearthed Prehistoric sites in Israel are not accessible to visitors. The following few places are either very important or important and convenient to visit. Tel Ubeidiya Located in the Jordan Valley, Ubeidiya is one of the earliest known Prehistoric sites. At the site, there are traces of the early migration of the Homo-erectus out of Africa, 2 million years ago. Mount Carmel Prehistoric Caves The unearthed findings represent 500,000 years of human evolution. The caves are part of a well preserved National Park, well presented and easy to visit. The caves declared as UNESCO World Heritage site. Sha`ar Hagolan Sha`ar Hagolan Neolithic village (8,000-7,500 years ago) is where the Yarmukian culture first defined. A culture which represents one of the earliest pottery making in the region. At the site, one of the earliest unearthed villages we can see an example of courtyard houses, an architecture concept that is in use since then.You can visit the small museum exhibiting the local findings. Chalcolithic Sites The Chalcolithic period is the beginnings of the copper metallurgy period. The most accessible sites are the temple in Ein Gedi at the Dead Sea west shore, the dwellings of Ain el Hariri in the Golan Heights and the many Nawamises (burial structures) spread in and around the Makhtesh Ramon area.
