An experience for a lifetime

Walking the Negev Desert from the heights of the Ramon mountains to the lower Arava valley, part of the Syrian-African Great Rift Valley, the largest fault on earth, and the nearby Dead Sea, the lowest place on earth, and crossing the Makhtesh Ramon, the largest geological crater exist, is an experience of a lifetime. The Negev landscape, the Makhtesh, and the Arva valley all result from a collision between Africa and the Euroasia tectonic plates 80-50 million years ago and are still in motion. In the first three days of our hike, we will walk on the Negev highland, in and out but mainly on the edge of the Ramon crater, seeing it from different angles and exploring its unique geological formation. In the last two days, we will cross great dry riverbeds, and if lucky, we will also see desert animals and some waterholes with water from the last desert flood. We will finish this part of the trip on the Arava next to the Jordanian border. We will spend the nights in a wilderness camp that we will set up daily as we progress on our trail. We sleep comfortably, eat well, drink in moderation, and enjoy the company of others around an open fire. Although in remote areas and a sense of solitary in sections, the trail is officially marked and authorized for the general public. Be ready for a medium challenging hike on rocky desert trails, strenuous and rough terrain in parts. Be in good shape and spirit.

We will Load the heavy bags on the logistic vehicle and walk 0.5km to our wilderness night camp on the Negev highland in the Nitzana riverbed. Day 2 – Today, we have a long day at the upper altitude of the Negev highland. We start the trail with a steep climb and then a moderate ascent to the highest mountain in the Negev desert, Mt. Ramon (1035m). On the way, we will cross one of the only two roads in our entire trip, this time a remote road mainly used by the military. Day 3 – Today, we have a shorter hike. We will walk on the outer side of the southern part of the Machtesh, in a remote part of the desert. We will walk a short detour off the trail to see a natural cistern, and If we are lucky, we will see it full of water. A few steep ups and downs will bring us to our night wilderness camp. Day total: 15km of distance, 305m of climbing, and 476m of descending. In our descending to the foot of the impressive wall built of huge rocks inclining in almost 90 degrees, a result of earth formation 100 million years ago. The Machtesh Ramon is the only place on earth where you can see layers of rock formation as old as 500 million years back. We will visit the Ammonite wall, when we can see fossils of that sophisticated marine animals as early as 400 million years ago. We will cross the second and the last paved road in our journey, this time a busy highway that connects the town of Mitzpe Ramon with the city of Eilat. We cross the Sothern wall into the crater and end the day in an organized desert camp in the middle of the Machtesh—the only camp on our trail with facilities and showers.
