Megiddo
is
a
World
Heritage
Site
by
UNESCO.
It
gained
the
reputation
of
being
the
jewel
in
the
crown
of
the
Biblical
archaeology
and
was
designated
as
the
place
of
the
“Armageddon”,
mentioned
in
the Book of Revelation.
Megiddo
settled
as
early
as
the
Pre-Pottery
Neolithic
period
(7th
–
6th
Millenniums
BCE).
The
fortified
Megiddo
was
one
of
the
early
urbanized
cities
at
the
Early
Bronze
Age
(in
the
3rd
millennium
BCE).
In
the
Middle
Bronze
Age
(20
th
–
16
th
Centuries
BCE),
the
city
was
a
fortified
Canaanite
city-state.
In
the
Late
Bronze
Age
(16
th
-
13
th
Centuries
BCE)
the
city
become
under
Egyptian
dominations.
In
the
Iron
Age
II,
Hazor
flourished
as
a
prominent
military
and
administration
center
of
the
Kingdom
of
Israel.
The
Assyrian
king
Tiglath-pileser
III
conquered
Megiddo
in
732
BCE
and
made
the
city
an
Assyrian administration center.
Today,
you
can
see
the
cult
center
of
the
Early
Bronz
Age,
the
Gate
of
the
Late
Bronze
Age,
the
six-chambered
gate,
the
three
palaces,
the
granary,
the
horse
stables,
and
the
underground
water
system
of
the
Iron
Age
II.
You
can
enjoy
the
360-degree
view
of
the
fertile
Jezreel
Valley and the near and far surrounding mountains.
