Ancient Judaism in the Land of Israel is mainly represented by archaeological sites from the late Second Temple, late Roman, and Byzantine periods. Two Jewish holy sites, both of them from the Herodian time, still function today. The 2,000-year- old Western Wall in Jerusalem and the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron.. The majority of the sites are ruins of old synagogues and numerous mikva'ot (purity-ritual baths that use water for cleansing) scattered throughout the country. Additional types, which are easy to visit, are the Jewish stronghold sites of the revolts against the Romans, including the Great Revolt sites of Herodium and Masada in the Judean Desert, Yodfat in the Lower Galilee, and Gamla in the Golan Heights. Representative examples of the Bar Kochba Revolt, escape tunnels, can be seen in Herodium and Hirbet Madras in the Judean foothills. Early synagogues from early Roman times can be seen in Herodium, Masada, Gamla, and Magdala. Most of the known ancient synagogues are from the Byzantine period. You can find the most impressive synagogue sites with easy access to Susya and Ein Gedi in the Judean Desert; Beit Alfa in the Jezreel Valley; Zippori in the lower Galilee; Capernaum and Chorazin at the shores of the Sea of Galilee; Baram and Meron in the upper Galilee; and Katzrin, Umm el Kanatir, and Hamat Gader in the Golan Heights. Synagogues from the Ottoman period (16 th – 19 th centuries) can be seen in Safed , Tiberias, Acre, Peki'in, and Jerusalem .
