UNESCO
World
Heritage
Site,
part
of
the
declaration
of
the
Negev
section of the old Incense Route from Arabia to the Mediterranean.
Avdat
was
founded
by
the
Nabateans
in
the
3
rd
century
BCE,
served
as
a
caravan
road
station,
become
part
of
the
Roman
Empire
in
106
AD,
converted
into
Christianity
in
the
4
th
century,
conquered
by
the
Muslims in 636 AD and abandoned in the 8
th
century.
Today,
Avdat
is
a
well-preserved
site.
You

visit
the
fortified
core
city,
the
Byzantine
churches,
the
dwelling
caves,
Roman
villas,
Roman
burial
cave,
Roman
legion
camp,
Winepresses,
bathhouse,
Nabatean
agriculture experiment station, and informative visitor's center.
